Study of the Infant Jesus, Holding a Veil
Black chalk, heightened with white on blue-grey paper.
Inscribed Andrea Sacchi and other illegible inscriptions on the verso.
Diameter 201 mm – 7 15/16 in.
This refined drawing is probably a preparatory study for the Infant Jesus playing with the Virgin’s veil, which is not such an usual subject. The combination of a religious subject with delicate draughtsmanship and blue paper are evocative of many drawings by Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato.
