This drawing is a preparatory study for the painting of Saint Cecilia Felt Divine Inspiration presented at the 1878 Salon (purchased by Mr. Morton, the United States Minister). An oil sketch is at the Tessé Museum in Le Mans (inv. 10 1172, fig. 1).
The saint is kneeling, her body seemingly tilting backwards, held in her fall by a musical angel.
