Léopold Leprince

Paris 1800 – Chartres 1847

Plain landscape in Connerré, Sarthe

Oil on paper.

Inscribed on the back 27 près Mon Comeri Sarthe.

134 x 293 mm – 5 1/4 x 11 9/16 in.

Born to family of landscape painters, Léopold Leprince made his apprenticeship with his father and his brother Xavier. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1822 to 1844, and in Douai, Valenciennes, Lille and Bordeaux. He is sometimes confused with his brothers Xavier and Gustave, the three of them having specialized in landscape and worked together. Leprince executed two studies of this spot in the Sarthes (Pays de la Loire in France), near Connerré according the misspelled inscription Comeri. Another version was for sale at Christie’s New York, 4 June 2009, lot 153. It represents the same spot, painted in the same sketchy way and approximatively at the same time but with minor differences. The existence of these two versions shows the painter’s need to study a special spot several times.

Condition report – Very good condition, a few stains in the corner on the back.
