This small anonymous study and its pendant, Horses and Carriage in Front of a Farm, a Willow Tree on the Right, are painted in an attractive and lively way. They demonstrate a deep sense of nature and a range of colors more evocative of the British school than the French. The artist’s particularly fluid touch here also reminds of British watercolor painters.

The artist has successfully combined different greens to evoke with poetry and soundness the shivering trees against the grey sky, almost stormy in the background.
