A Couple in a Park

Oil on canvas. Inscribed and dated A XY 1857

12 x 15 15/16 in.

This romantic view of an overgrown garden remains anonymous. Blocks of stone leaning against the beautiful and solid wall of an entrance gate, climbing plants joined in an arch above the pillars, a few steps, a vase form the decor of this scene. The dense vegetation shelters a strolling couple, passing in an elusive way, painted with light brushstrokes over the landscape. All this results in a secretive, intimate and silent atmosphere with the romantic feeling of ghostly figures gliding by. An inscription on the right part of the wall – Is it a signature, a monogram, or an inscription? – provides us with a date: 1857.

Condition report – On its original canvas.

Examination under the UV light: Negligible retouching in the landscape. The paint is in an excellent condition.
