View of the Colonna Palace in Subiaco
Black chalk.
233 x 305 (on sight) – 9 3/16 x 12 1/64 in.
Titled, dated and signed at the bottom : View of Palazzo Colomne 45 miles from Rome. 1811. – Jean Daniel Audra
This black chalk design was made after the engraving[1] de Constant Bourgeois (Guiscard, 1767-Passy, 1841) representing a View of Palazzo Colonna in Subiaco (Ill. 1), from the Collection of picturesque views and factories of Italy drawn from life and published by Ct Bourgeois (Paris, in the author, Basset, 1804-1806).
The author of this black chalk drawing, Jean Daniel Audra, takes up the composition of Constant Bourgeois and adds in the margin at the bottom, with a brown pen and ink, the same title as that mentioned under the engraving of Constant Bourgeois : View of Palazzo Colomne 45 miles from Rome. He adds below his name and the date of 1811. The only difference we can notice is the absence in the drawing of the two characters walking along the path that leads to the Palazzo Colonna.
We did not find any information about Jean Daniel Audra, was he from the same family as the Swiss artist, Jean-François Audra (Geneva, 1766 – 1847) ?
