Gaspare Diziani, born in Belluno in 1689, began his studies with Antonio Lazzarini, then continued his apprenticeship in Venice in the workshops of Gregorio Lazzarini and Sebastiano Ricci. In the second half of the 18th century, he travelled to Germany, notably Munich, where he produced four door tops for the Royal Palace. From 1720, he was active in Venice, where he joined the Fraglia dei Pittori Veneziani. His works include those for the church of San Rocco in Belluno, the sacristy of the church of Santo Stefano in Venice and the Palazzo Spineda in Treviso.
In our drawing, the pen strokes that follow one another in regular parallel lines across the sheet are characteristic of this Venetian draftsman’s style around 1750, although he later abandoned this style for a freer style. Gaspare Diziani emphasizes the intimacy of this scene with strong contrasts of light and shadow, achieved by contrasting the dark wash strokes with the paper reserves.
