Monogrammed and dated J.L. 20 and inscribed <em>Le Vieux cerne<\/em> at lower left.<\/p>\n<p>225 x 264 mm &#8211; 8 7\/8 x 10 3\/8 in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Born in Vend\u00e9e, Jean Launois showed an early talent for drawing which was encouraged by his parents. He was trained by his fellows Vendean Charles Milcendeau and Auguste Lep\u00e8re, then entered the Acad\u00e9mie Julian in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Drafted in the First World War in 1916, he continued to draw on the front and made many portraits of soldiers which he showed to the curator of the Luxembourg museum L\u00e9once B\u00e9n\u00e9dite in 1918. The latter bought several works from the artist, including the magnificent portraits <em>Charlot<\/em> and <em>Caporal en bonnet de police,<\/em> today in the Centre Georges Pompidou. It is in this period that he painted the portrait of Anatole France which appeared on the cover of <em>L\u2019Illustration<\/em> on 1 January 1924. He won a scholarship which allowed him to spend two years in Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers where he met the painters of the school of Algiers, such as \u00c9tienne Bouchaud, and befriended \u00c9tienne Dinet and Albert Marquet. In 1923, he won the Indochina Prize and began a long journey in Asia, on foot, on horseback, and by boat, during which he drew extensively.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1926, his first major exhibition at the Van Leer Gallery enjoyed great success and earned him commissions of illustration of literary works. In 1927, he married the daughter of the poet Andr\u00e9 Suar\u00e9z. Throughout the 1920s, he travelled a lot between Paris, the Vend\u00e9e, and Algeria. In the 1930s, due to pressing financial needs he began to teach drawing in Saint-Jean-des-Monts in Vend\u00e9e. There he met the painter and ceramist Henry Simon who had also been trained by Milcendeau. In 1939, he was mobilized despite his precarious health. Through the intervention of his friends, including Andr\u00e9 Dunoyer de Segonzac, he was relieved of his duties in the field and assigned to cartography. At the end of the war, he went to live with his parents-in-law in Saint Tropez, but in March 1942 he left for Algeria and died there in November.<\/p>\n<p>Most of his works are in the museum of the Abbaye de la Sainte-Croix in Sables-d\u2019Olonne. A retrospective exhibition of his works took place in the Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers in 1937.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Le Vieux Cerne is a locality in Saint-Jean-des-Monts. Despite his strong attachment to Algeria, Jean Launois never ceased to draw inspiration in his native Vend\u00e9e, just like Henry Simon. Jean Launois is better known for his works in watercolor, the medium he began to use after his first stay in Algeria, but the beauty and delicacy of the face of this young shepherd shows how gifted he was in drawing itself. His portraits and landscapes in charcoal of the late 1910s and the early 1920s are full of grace: the classicism of the lines is put to the service of an intense depth of expression and a remarkable
