Numberings on the verso.<\/p>\n<p>215 x 445 mm &#8211; 8 7\/16 x 17 1\/2 in.<\/p>\n<p>Provenance : Studio stamps Lugt\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marquesdecollections.fr\/detail.cfm\/marque\/5623\/total\/1\">228 B<\/a>\u00a0on the recto, lower left, and Lugt\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marquesdecollections.fr\/detail.cfm\/marque\/5622\/total\/1\">228a<\/a>\u00a0(numbered 138), on the verso; probably in the studio sale, Paris, 16 Januray 1901 (expert G. Petit).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jean Achille B\u00e9nouville was trained in Paris first under L\u00e9on Cogniet and then \u00c9douard Picot, and traveled to Italy on several occasions even before winning the Rome Prize. In 1843-1844 he met Corot in Rome and worked with him. In 1845, while his brother L\u00e9on won the first prize for history painting, his Ulysses and Nausicaa\u00a0earned him the Grand prize for historical landscape. He left for the regulation four years of study in Rome, where he remained in reality for 25 years. He continued, all the same, to send works frequently to the Salon and to visit France. Only in 1871 did he definitely return to Paris, three years before the first Impressionist exhibition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>B\u00e9nouville\u2019s extended stay in the Eternal City had kept him apart from the innovations in landscape painting, especially the Realism of Courbet and the Barbizon School.
