Signed and dated\u00a0<i>St Quentin 1765\u00a0<\/i>and numbered\u00a0<i>N\u00b07\u00a0<\/i>lower left.\u00a0<\/span>In a 19th-century mount.<\/p>\n<p>365 x 258 mm &#8211; 14 3\/8 x 10 3\/16 in.<\/p>\n<p>Provenance\u00a0: Anonymous sale, H\u00f4tel Drouot, Paris, 25 October 1991, lot 133; anonymous sale, H\u00f4tel Drouot, Paris, 1<sup>st<\/sup>December 2008, lot 177; Christie\u2019s, Paris,\u00a0<i>Une collection fran\u00e7aise\u00a0: passion partag\u00e9e d\u2019un couple d\u2019amateurs<\/i>, 22 March 2017, lot 122.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This beautiful drawing by one of Fran\u00e7ois Boucher\u2019s main collaborators bears testimony of the master\u2019s influence over his pupils. A student in the Acad\u00e9mie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Saint-Quentin was awarded several prizes (second prize in 1757, first prize in 1760) before winning the\u00a0<em>Grand Prix\u00a0<\/em>in 1762 with his painting\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ensba.fr\/ow2\/catzarts\/images\/Prp010-9924.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Death of Socrates<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Paris, \u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure des Beaux-Arts). The \u00c9cole Royale des \u00c9l\u00e8ves Prot\u00e9g\u00e9s, where he continued to distinguish himself, provided him with a complement of education before he was officially authorized to travel to Rome in\u00a0September 1765. He studied at the Acad\u00e9mie de France in Rome from the end of 1765 to 1769, under Charles Natoire\u2019s directorship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his return to France, he seems to have joined Fran\u00e7ois Boucher\u2019s studio; only after his master\u2019s death did he settle independently. In 1776, he was part of the exhibition which was held at the Colys\u00e9e, a place of leisure built on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es from 1771 to 1778.\u00a0<em>The<\/em><em>View of the Place Louis XV<\/em>, nowadays in the Besan\u00e7on Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art et d\u2019Arch\u00e9ologie, was shown at this occasion. Saint-Quentin also produced numerous books illustrations, such as those for\u00a0<em>La Folle Journ\u00e9e, ou le Mariage de Figaro\u00a0<\/em>by Beaumarchais.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lovely drawing was executed before the artist travelled to Rome, while he was still a pupil of the \u00c9cole Royale des \u00c9l\u00e8ves Prot\u00e9g\u00e9s. It shows how skillfully Saint-Quentin was able to use what he had learnt from Fran\u00e7ois Boucher in terms of technique and subject. The sheet is signed, like most of his drawings, which probably indicates that it was meant to be sold to an audience who could maybe not afford one of Boucher\u2019s works and was therefore satisfied with a beautiful work by one of his best pupils.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Condition report &#8211; Good overall condition. Laid down on the 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century mount. A small stain in the center of the upper part.
