Putto with an Urn

Red chalk, red chalk wash. Framing lines with red chalk.

151 x 740 mm – 5 15/16 x 29 1/8 in.

This charming drawing evokes a sculpture and reminds many sculpted groups of the 17th century, such as Jacques Buirette’s chubby putti for example. Unfortunately, none of this artist’s drawings are known.

The sense of volume is remarkable in this small drawing, which is probably a preparatory study for a funerary figure: the cherub’s chubby cheeks, plump thighs and arms are well rendered. So is his silent expression of introspective meditation, gaze turned down, towards the urn.

Condition report – Excellent condition.
