This drawing is a study for the figure of Judith preparing to behead Holofernes, a subject for which we have no trace of pictorial production today. A study of this subject was presented at the exhibition in Dole in 2003 (cf. Virginie Frelin et Elisabeth Coulon, Jules Machard, le culte de la ligne, exhibition catalogue, 4 April to 15 June 2003, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dole, fig. 5, p. 23).
